Understanding OET Nursing
What is OET for Nurses?
OET for Nurses is the nursing-specific version of the Occupational English Test. It assesses whether nurses can communicate effectively in healthcare settings through Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking tasks based on professional and clinical situations.
Unlike a general English examination, OET Nursing connects language ability with situations nurses may encounter when communicating with patients, relatives and other healthcare professionals.
How OET Nursing reflects professional communication
Healthcare-Based Test Content
Listening and Reading activities use healthcare topics, workplace communication and patient-care situations.
Nursing Writing Tasks
Writing preparation develops the ability to interpret case notes and produce a clear, purposeful professional healthcare letter.
Nurse–Patient Speaking Role-Plays
Speaking preparation focuses on explaining, reassuring, questioning and advising within realistic nursing scenarios.
Overseas Registration Preparation
OET is selected by many nurses who need to demonstrate English-language ability for professional registration in eligible countries.
Suitable for
OET acceptance, required scores and accepted test modes vary by country and nursing regulator. Candidates should confirm the latest requirements for their intended pathway.

OET Nursing FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About OET for Nurses
Clear answers about the OET Nursing test, Medcity's preparation options, regulator scores, test modes and overseas nursing pathways.
Understanding OET Nursing
What is OET for Nurses?
OET for Nurses is the Nursing version of the Occupational English Test. It assesses Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking through healthcare communication tasks. Writing and Speaking are profession-specific, while Listening and Reading use healthcare content suitable for candidates across OET professions.
Who can join OET Nursing coaching at Medcity?
Medcity's OET Nursing coaching is suitable for nursing students, GNM, BSc Nursing and Post Basic BSc Nursing graduates, registered nurses, and nurses preparing for professional registration or healthcare opportunities in countries that accept OET.
Can nursing students prepare for OET before graduation?
Yes. Nursing students can begin preparation before graduation if they want to develop healthcare English and understand the test format. The point at which an OET result can be used for registration depends on the qualification and application rules of the intended nursing regulator.
Do I need nursing work experience to take OET?
No work experience is required simply to prepare for or sit OET. However, overseas nursing registration and employment pathways may have separate requirements relating to qualifications, registration, recent practice or experience.
Is OET easier than IELTS for nurses?
Neither test is automatically easier. Many nurses find OET more familiar because it uses healthcare situations, case notes and patient communication. The better choice depends on your target regulator, current English level and comfort with each test format.
Is OET accepted for nursing registration abroad?
OET is accepted as English-language evidence by nursing regulators in destinations including the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, subject to each regulator's current scores, result-combining rules and accepted test modes.
Does passing OET guarantee overseas nursing registration?
No. An OET result is only one part of an overseas nursing pathway. Applicants may also need qualification recognition, professional registration, identity checks, work history, competence assessment, immigration approval or other documents required by the relevant authority.

What happens in the OET Reading sub-test?
OET Reading contains three parts and 42 questions completed in 60 minutes. It assesses rapid information search, understanding short healthcare workplace texts and interpreting longer professional healthcare articles.

What happens in OET Nursing Speaking?
OET Nursing Speaking takes approximately 20 minutes and includes two profession-specific role-plays. The candidate takes the role of a nurse while the interlocutor acts as a patient, relative or carer.
How is OET scored?
Each OET sub-test receives a numerical score from 0 to 500 and a corresponding letter grade from A to E. The nursing regulator or organisation receiving the result decides the minimum score required for its pathway.
