dMAT Exam Germany: Who Needs It? Full APS Guide 2026

Medcity International Academy dMAT Germany 2026 admission banner featuring an aspiring international student holding books with Berlin landmarks in the background. The banner highlights the new APS requirement for Indian students applying to German public universities, supporting study abroad, bachelor's and master's admissions, and higher education opportunities in Germany.

New APS Germany rule explained: who needs the dMAT, BCA/degree exemptions, 29 June cutoff, fees and dates. A Kerala counsellor's guide.

At Medcity International Academy , our study-abroad desk in Kerala has been receiving the same question repeatedly since late June:

“Do I need to write the dMAT exam?”

Students who had already shortlisted German universities, arranged their language certificates and started their APS paperwork suddenly found a new document added to their application checklist.

This guide is based on the questions our counsellors are currently receiving from students across Kerala and Mangalore. The information has been checked against the latest official documentation published by APS India and g.a.s.t.

Start Here: A Five-Question dMAT Self-Check

Use the following questions to understand whether the new dMAT requirement may apply to your Germany master’s application.

  1. Are you applying for a master’s programme?

Bachelor’s and PhD applicants are not affected under the current procedure, regardless of their academic field.

  2. Is your intended intake Summer Semester 2027 or later?

The current dMAT requirement applies to eligible applicants for the Summer Semester 2027 master’s intake and subsequent intakes. Winter Semester 2026/27 applicants are outside the current scope.

  3. Did you complete your APS online registration and ship your complete APS documents only on or after 29 June 2026?

If either your APS online registration or the shipment of your complete documents happened before 29 June 2026, the transitional exemption applies to that APS procedure.

  4. Does your previous degree fall under Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or Management?

APS India considers the official degree title, branch, major, honours subject or specialisation shown in your academic documents.

  5. Are you participating in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university-partnership programme?

These applicants are exempt when the relevant confirmation and group number are submitted with the APS documentation.

If you answered “no” to any of the first three questions, the dMAT is unlikely to apply to your current application.

If you answered “yes” to the first three questions and your previous degree falls within an affected field, the dMAT will normally become part of your APS documentation.

Which Degree Fields Are Affected by the dMAT?

APS India does not classify a qualification only by the subjects you studied or the description used in a college brochure.

The official wording shown on your degree certificate, transcript, marksheets and university documents is important. APS India may also consider your major, branch, honours subject, specialisation and degree duration.

The three main affected field groups are:

  • Engineering, including formally awarded B.E., B.Tech or equivalent engineering qualifications in recognised engineering branches
  • Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics, including closely related fields
  • Business and Management, including Business Administration and Management Studies

B.Tech Computer Science Engineering and BCA Are Not the Same

A B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering normally falls under Engineering because it is formally awarded as an engineering qualification.

The following standalone qualifications are not automatically covered unless APS India classifies the official degree under one of the affected field groups:

  • Bachelor of Computer Applications or BCA
  • B.Sc. Computer Science
  • Computer Applications
  • Information Technology without an Engineering designation
  • Artificial Intelligence as a standalone field
  • Data Science as a standalone field
  • Cyber Security as a standalone field

This is one of the most common areas of confusion among students who contact our counselling team. Many assume that every technology-related qualification is considered Engineering. APS classification does not work that way.

The official academic classification matters more than the general subject content.

Other Fields Not Automatically Included

The APS India field list also states that the following fields are not automatically covered unless the qualification is officially classified under an affected field:

  • B.Sc. Biotechnology and related life-science degrees
  • Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Architecture and Planning
  • Agriculture, unless awarded as Agricultural Engineering
  • Nursing and other health-science degrees
  • Law, Education, Arts, Humanities and most Social Sciences

Degrees That May Need Individual Assessment

Some sector-specific management qualifications may require separate assessment rather than being included automatically because they contain the word “Management”.

Examples include:

  • Hotel Management
  • Hospitality Management
  • Tourism Management
  • Aviation Management
  • Healthcare Management
  • Hospital Administration
  • Construction Management
  • Infrastructure Management

If your qualification does not clearly match one of the affected field groups, contact APS India and request written clarification. Do not make a major application decision based only on informal articles, videos or social media posts.

How the dMAT Fits Into Your Germany Application Timeline

Students who have already started their Germany application may now need to add the dMAT to a process that can include:

  • German language preparation from A1 to B2
  • English-language certification, where required
  • Degree and institution recognition checks
  • anabin verification
  • APS document verification
  • University applications
  • Admission offers
  • Visa documentation

The main risk is not necessarily the difficulty of the examination. The larger concern is timing.

The first dMAT examination in India is scheduled for 26 September 2026. The registration deadline for the first sitting is 15 September 2026, and certificates are scheduled to become available from 12 October 2026.

Test-centre seats are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. If your preferred location is full, you may have to select another available centre.

Registering late or discovering the requirement after a university deadline could delay your application. This can happen even when your academic profile is otherwise suitable because the required certificate may not be available on time.

Can APS Documents Be Submitted Before the dMAT Certificate Is Ready?

Yes.

Eligible applicants may submit their APS application documents before the dMAT certificate is available. APS India may begin checking the other documents, but the APS certificate can only be issued after the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and verified.

This flexibility applies only to the dMAT certificate. All other academic documents required by the applicable APS checklist should be included in the initial submission.

A practical application sequence is:

  1. Check whether your previous degree is affected.
  2. Check your institution and degree status in anabin.
  3. Register for an available dMAT test slot.
  4. Prepare and submit your complete APS documentation.
  5. Continue working on university applications.
  6. Submit the dMAT certificate to APS when it becomes available.
  7. Proceed with admission and visa documentation.

dMAT Exam Format, Duration and Fee

The dMAT is a computer-based academic aptitude test conducted at an approved g.a.s.t. test centre.

  • Duration: Approximately three and a half hours, including a break
  • Current examination fee: €150, payable during registration
  • Test language: English
  • Question format: Single-choice questions
  • Module for the APS India procedure: General Academic Module

Core Module

The Core Module measures general cognitive and analytical ability through three subtests:

  • Figure sequences
  • Mathematical equations
  • Latin squares

General Academic Module

The General Academic Module tests how well applicants apply analytical and cognitive skills to academic problem-solving.

It focuses on transfer and application skills rather than the memorisation of facts from an undergraduate syllabus.

How Should You Prepare for the dMAT?

The dMAT is not based on a traditional chapter-by-chapter academic syllabus.

Preparation should focus on:

  • Timed logical-reasoning practice
  • Pattern recognition
  • Figure and number sequences
  • Ratios and percentages
  • Basic algebra
  • Mathematical reasoning
  • Academic problem-solving
  • Time management

Practising these skills under timed conditions is likely to be more useful than revising your entire undergraduate syllabus.

Three Things the dMAT Is Not

1. It Is Not a Pass-or-Fail Gate for APS

A low dMAT result does not automatically mean that an APS certificate will be refused.

German universities decide independently how the result is assessed as part of their admission procedure. The weight given to the dMAT may vary between universities and programmes.

2. It Does Not Replace TestAS or anabin

TestAS is a separate academic aptitude test that some universities may request.

anabin is Germany’s official database for checking the recognition status of foreign institutions and qualifications.

A strong dMAT result cannot compensate for an institution or qualification that does not meet formal recognition requirements.

3. It Is Not Retroactive

Applicants covered by the transitional exemption because they completed APS online registration or shipped their complete APS documents before 29 June 2026 do not need to add the dMAT to that APS procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About the dMAT

I am studying German A1 to B2 with Medcity but planning to apply for Ausbildung. Does the dMAT apply to me?

No. The current dMAT requirement is connected to selected master’s applicants going through the APS verification process.

Ausbildung in Germany follows a different application, documentation and visa pathway.

Is there a dMAT test centre in Kerala?

Mananthavady is included in the current list of planned dMAT test centres in India.

The final list and live seat availability will be displayed during registration. If Mananthavady is unavailable or fully booked, you may need to select another city.

My BCA includes “Business Systems” or “Data Analytics” in the title. Does that bring it under the requirement?

Possibly. Borderline and interdisciplinary qualifications may require individual classification by APS India.

Do not decide based only on one word in the course title. Compare your official qualification with the affected-fields list or contact APS India for written clarification.

I already have an offer letter from a German university. Do I still need the dMAT?

Yes, if your degree field, intake and APS timing fall within the dMAT requirement.

A university offer letter does not automatically exempt an applicant from APS documentation requirements.

I have a B.Tech and an MBA. Which dMAT module should I take?

Under the current APS India procedure, affected applicants take the General Academic Module.

You should separately check whether your chosen university requires any additional subject-specific aptitude test or assessment.

Does the dMAT cost anything beyond the examination fee?

The current official dMAT fee is €150 and is payable to g.a.s.t. during registration.

APS India does not currently list a separate dMAT-specific fee in addition to the normal APS processing charges.
